Power or Antennas - When Less is More?

Having been a QRP operator and having started my amateur radio career from among the ranks of QRP operators, you will be able to instantly tell my bias for antennas.  From the standpoint of economics, you will get the most signal strength for your dollar by investing in antenna systems (when you can) as opposed to investing in power.  There are many folks who are limited in the ability to put up effective antennas by Homeowners Association (HOA) restrictions.  There is a move afoot in Congress called the Parity Act, HR-4969 , that will allow radio amateurs to legally fight the HOA's.  However, this bill has not been signed into law, as of the time of this writing. Back to the subject of antennas, a little knowledge about antenna theory will go a long way towards improving your signal up to 18 dB or 3S units.

Signal Strength in Relative Versus Absolute Terms

RF performance of both amplifiers and antennas are most easily talked about in relative terms than in absolute terms.  It is here that most hams get lost in the jargon.  Here are the standards.  An S9 signal is created by inputting a 50 microvolt signal into the antenna ports of a receiver.  Six whole dB down from S9 is S8 which is a sound power level factor of 4 (or 1/4 the power), S7 is a power factor of 1/16, S6 is a power factor of 1/64, S5 is a power factor of 256, S4 is 1/1024 and so forth.

Let us consider a RF path from South Carolina to California - some 3000 miles away.  An amateur in California is transmitting at 1 kW and is being received by an operator in SC at S9 - a really strong signal and the SC operator copies him well.  The SC operator has a QRP rig capable of producing 5 watts of RF.  The difference in power level is a factor of 200 or 23 dB (10log200).  The California operator will see the signal of the the SC operator at a tad over S5 (provided his S-meter is calibrated).  The copy by the CA operator of the SC signal is still excellent provided S5 provided the noise floor is well below S5.  In the high bands, provided you have a quiet receiver, the atmospheric noise is typically low.  In the high bands, high power amplifiers are typically overkill, provided propagation conditions are decent.

Signal levels higher than 83 dB over S9 has the potential to damage receivers.  Front end limiters must be used if that possibility exists.

The Half Wavelength Rule

For the high bands - that is 30m to 10m, the standard bearer is the dipole.  The dipole is a very simple antenna to construct and understand and will give you the highest value in cost effectiveness.  The dipole at a minimum half wavelength height above ground will give you 6+ dB of gain due to ground reflection relative to an isotropic radiator at 0 dBi as a reference, at the radiation lobe at typically 40 degree angle.  Above and below this arrival angle, there is attenuation.  A general purpose dipole will do well at half a wavelength.  A dipole meant for DX will need that radiation lobe maximum at lower takeoff angles - typically 5-8 degrees and will need to be more than a half wavelength high above ground.  At these heights, radio amateurs typically employ beam antennas that provide more forward gain than a dipole, and provide the additional benefit of front to back ratio - enhancing signal to noise ratio. I can go into a whole dissertation on antenna design and modeling but I won't, I will relate what I have produced from experience as an avid DX chaser that learning about antennas and applying what I have learned has given me in a little over a year almost 700 band points towards the ARRL Challenge award.  One needs 1000 band points to qualify for this award and I have line of sight to over 900 in my short 4 year career as an amateur.  Fully 700 of those have been in the last year and a half through the judicious application of antenna theory and of input power.  For the low bands, the antenna of choice is the vertical since it is near impossible to get a dipole high enough to get good takeoff angles in the low bands - 160m, 80m.  A 40m dipole at 50-60 feet is very good compromise and a very versatile antenna for both DX and regional communications.

Verticals and Ground Planes

Verticals typically require an effective ground plane to be effective.  The main advantage of the vertical is the low take off angle of the radiation pattern which makes it suitable for DX work.  Forward gain however, is much lower compared to a dipole unless the vertical is over sea water or has an extensive ground system.  For example, on 160m, over 25000 (48 wavelengths) feet of radials is required to maximize the antenna efficiency when laid on the ground.  That is according to the ARRL handbook.  Anything less than 48 wavelengths of radials will have reduced efficiency, when the radials are laid on the ground.

The Place for Power

Power has a definite place and it is not desired or even necessary to be used all the time.  One of the ethical principles of amateur radio is to apply the least power to make the communication possible.  Sometimes, the least power to make that communication possible is 1 kW or even 1.5kW.  Take marginal conditions for example, - low signal levels in a high noise environment, or poor propagation, or compromise antennas.  Power becomes a bigger factor precisely for the above reasons on the low bands, 160m, 80m, or even 40m.  Low band operators, and typically the good ones, milk their stations of every bit of efficiency on the antenna side (both RX and TX) and typically run power.  According to ON4UN, typical low band DX'r on top band will run 800W to a kW.

Skill Versus Brute Force

The desirability of having lower power forces one to develop and hone operating skills, understand and employ techniques to improve signal to noise ratio.  This is the David and Goliath analogy. Taken to the extreme, any idiot can fire up a water cooled Voice of America transmitter and generate a huge signal.  I place hams who take this approach in the same category as the guys who burn rubber on their 500 hp Mustangs.  Impressive indeed, but is it necessary.  On the other hand, if you align yourself with the "Davids" of the world, substituting skill for brute force, you will be in better company - to the like of Stew Perry - and you will be upholding the tenets of the Amateur Radio service.

Hams treading the middle ground are concerned about others—hams, neighbors, family members, etc. They try to fit in, to get along, to accommodate a community of interests in addition to their own. They practice the Golden Rule Do unto others as you would have them do unto you (reasonable variations notwithstanding).

As hams who comprise a federally licensed emergency service, we enjoy certain protections from unreasonable local restriction.  These privileges are welcome and necessary as a whole, but they can be easily abused.

Just because we can transmit a 1500-W signal doesn’t mean we should. Just because we can erect a 200-foot-high antenna tower doesn’t mean we should. Hams who follow the Golden Rule integrate their radio pursuits with the pursuits of others—not because they have to, but because they want to!
Governments can’t legislate common sense. That’s up to us.

Case in Point - Knowledge is Power

To start, let’s assume that you have a typical shack. A 100-W transceiver graces your operating desk and "talks" to a coax-fed dipole (or two) through a 300-W antenna tuner. Thanks to the tuner, your rig can happily put out full power regardless of actual antenna/feed line SWRs on the various bands you work.  You have erected a 260 foot Carolina Windom with both ends at 35 feet above ground level (as the reference).  EZNEC models indicate that DX coming in at 5 degrees or less are 15 dB down from the max lobe or about -11dB net.   Let's say that you are avid DX'r and want to get more DX in your log, especially in the low bands. You now acquire knowledge that if you raise the Windom to 66 feet, you gain an average of 6 dB on 160m relative to the 35 ft reference antenna .  If you now employ an inverted L for the low bands and increase your efficiency by 12 dB in the 160m (by going from-11dB to +1 dB),

Let's see how the balance tips.  The great thing about improving your antenna system is that you get the improvement both ways - on receive and transmit.  Let's ignore the receive benefit for the moment and just look at the transmit trade:

Cost: $50 in wire from Lowes, and additional $50 for NEMA boxes, SO239, and and additional $100 in good quality coaxial cables - total outlay $200
Transmit gain increase 12 dB or 2 S units on DX

Raisng the dipole to 60 feet:
Cost: additional rope $20
Transmit gain is 6 dB on 160m DX

Cost of Power (relative to barefoot 100W) - costs are rough numbers
11.8 dB or 1500W - approximately $4000 (ACOM 2000)
10 dB or 1000W - $800-$1200 for a used tube amplifier Drake L4B or Heathkit SB220
$2500 for a new ACOM1000
7 dB or 500W  -  $2500 for an Elecraft KPA500
$1100 for an Ameritron AL811

It is a "no brainer" to figure out that improving the antenna system is the more cost effective and signal effective way to go.

Hidden Costs of Power

Don’t think you can get away with just an amplifier! The power output curve is often deceptive. For example, above 300 W outputor so, you’ll need a beefier antenna tuner. Expect to spend up to $500 for a good one.  And don’t forget about the ac mains, either. You can probably get away with running a 500-W output amplifier on 120 V ac, but beyond that, it’s 240 V all the way. (Don’t believe me? A 500-W output amplifier runs about 1000 W input power. That’s 8.5 A at 120 V. With your rig added in, that’s more than 10 A. Believe me, the lights in your house will "jump" to the rhythm of your code key or your spoken words!)

Chances are good that you won’t know how (or won’t want) install that 240-V line yourself, either. The materials and an electrician to install them likely will total $300 to $500. Many first-time amplifier users don’t consider their beast’s power supply requirements until they’ve set up the amp and started "browning out" the rest of their house! If this is you, you’ll be lucky if you don’t trash your TV set or your home computer in the process of "modulating" your 120-V power feed!

If you live in an urban setting, don’t neglect the potential "public relations" costs of firing up a beast of signal in the midst of all thoseconsumer electronics devices. I can legally stand on the solid rock of FCC-mandated power output limits— but be warned - that you may be shunned by your neighbors.

A Better Way - A Balanced Middle Ground 

To maintain good relations with your neighbors, XYL, fellow hams, and to keep your wallet full and not have to modify your house wiring, consider improving your antenna system before investing in an amplifier. Here are some ideas to get you started

One almost universal way to get out more signal is to get your antenna(s) farther up in the air (your present antenna or a new. Build a taller mast, find a taller tree or put up a tower.

If that dipole just isn’t cutting it, put up a contest-winning and DX-catching secret weapon a full-wave horizontal loop for 40 or 80 meters (up as high as possible, of course!). Feed it with coax and use a tuner on bands above the fundamental frequency. That’s a "cheap ‘n’ dirty" way to snag an extra 2 to 10 dB, depending on frequency.

For less than the price of an entry-level 1000W amplifier you can buy or make a multiband hexagonal beam antenna and a decent rotator. This dynamic duo, mounted reasonably high, (I mean 25-35 feet) will offer a noticeable and steerable improvement to your signal. Remember amplifiers only boost your transmitted signal and do nothing to improve reception. By rotating a directional antenna you can often achieve a double benefit — boosting the signal you’re trying to receive while attenuating signals that are unwanted. For example, if I’m working a European ham from my South Carolina QTH, a potentially interfering signal from an op in Florida—located in the side null of my directional antenna—may drop 20 dB or more! The difference, more than 30 dB of signal enhancement, could never be achieved by a lone amplifier.  I constructed a hexagonal beam antenna for less than $300.  I used a push up mast and fabricated my own pilot bearings and thrust bearings for another $250.  I purchased a used but rugged rotator for $200.  Now I have 3dBd gain over a dipole, a a front to back ratio of 18-25dB, on 6 bands - 20-6m all for less than $1000.  Don't get me wrong, the LPDA at 60-80 feet will perform better, but at what price?  Anything over 40 feet requires some sort of a tower structure.

Let me come clean and admit the cold hard truth now.  I am a DX'r and there are marginal conditions that require power.  There is a time and place for power. My first amplifier was a well used Drake L4B that was kept in museum condition by its previous owner.  It would put out 10 dB additional signal. I seldom drive with more than 80 watts on it and so I can only realistically get only 300 watts more than my second 500 watt amplifier, a reliable Elecraft KPA500.  Those additional watts which is less than half an S unit meant the difference for me in snagging FT4TA Tromelin and E30FB Eritrea, two DX entities that only come around every 15 years or so.  It also helped me snag VU4KV Andaman which I venture to guess would not have been possible on my 500W amplifier.  Remember, I am also  competing against power, and I am using all my skills in timing (optimum propagation), putting my transmitter VFO to where the DX station is listening, and lining up my beam on the ideal RF path.

On SSB, learn the correct use of your rig’s speech processor. There’s another 3-dB (or more) improvement, this time in the modulation department! No purchase necessary!  Learn to use your rigs signal equalizer and boost the midrange 16dB and roll off the highs and lows.  This will serve to attenuate low and high frequency noise and boost the mid-range where the ear has been given the God given gift of sensitivity to begin with.   Noise devices and receive antennas are relatively cheap and home brewable.

So, where has this middle ground taken me?  Admittedly, I have had to use power occasionally and sparingly.  On 80m, I was able to get DXCC in one year.  I was able to get 5 band DXCC and DXCC on 17m.  That only leaves 12m, 30m and 160m.  Given the choice, of only one, I will take the "killer" antenna versus the "rock crusher" amplifier.  Take it from a guy whose second DXCC award is QRP-DXCC.  They say life is too short for QRP.  I say QRO is a lot more fun and productive after you have learned the skills derived from QRP operation and apply them to QRO operation.

Just Confirmed Andaman VU4KV on Clublog

ND7J just texted me with the good news.  Me, along with Bill N4IQ and ND7J were confirmed in Clublog.  Timing is everything in this game.  I missed the window on 30m when N4IQ told me that VU4KV was loud and I was still mobile.  I noticed them spotted on SSB a few hours later.  They were weak.  Putting on the pre-amp just made things worse.  I scanned the beam around for maximum signal strength.  I looked hard for the station he was working.  There was a small window during which he got strong and the station he was working was also strong.  He was listening on 14240 while being on 14185.  I felt a warm sweat of excitement.  No jammers  this time to spoil things.  I had the L4B set up for maximum output.  I figured I had five minutes or so before the band closes.  I called four times and heard me - norway yankee four germany five nine.  I mumbled the reply.  Excitedly, I called N4IQ on 2m and asked him if he could hear VU4.  It turned out he just worked him also.

QSO with NH7O - Off the Grid Station on Maui on 160m

Alastair Cooper has an interesting Bio on QRZ and he has his own website

He makes extensive use of a pneumatic antenna launcher to launch wire into the trees over ravines.  His 80m/160m Vee Wire Beam  is 35m above ground level at the lowest point and he also shunt feeds the tower on 160m.  He gets out as far as Europe and gets SE US quite well.  His rig is a K3 and he is building a kW homebrew amp.  His QTH is totally off the grid and he grows all his own food.

Great Ragchew with K4EJQ on 160m

Bunky is a 72 year old ham but great still with his paddle.    He slows down for others which is very courteous when others are slower.    He sped up for me since I was running about 24 wpm.  He has a great setup with a K9AY and an inverted L and was running 1 KW on a home brewed amp.  He told me my signal was strong into TN about 544 miles away.  So it looks like TX antenna is getting out even on nearby stations.  He has been an active ham for longer than I am alive.  He also has an 18 element beam on a 100 foot boom for 6 m just 20 ft off the ground.   We must have carried on for 20 minutes - maybe longer....Tnx for the great QSO Bunky and CUAGN down the log.

New Hexbeam Kit - Homebrewed

I have improved over the Homebrew designs I have made over the years.  This kit weighs in at at 17,3 lbs.for the spreaders and center post - no wires and no ropes.  Weight includes the canvas bag.  The wires would add another 2.5 pounds. The base plate and flanges  added 4 lbs.   Overall, with wire, this hexagonal beam weighs in at just under 20 lbs.  This is a lot more robust than the one I have made using "crappie" fishing poles, albeit, at the expense of additional weight, since my "crappie" pole hex-beam only weighs 14 or so pounds with all the wires and rope soaking wet.  It is still a fair amount lighter than the commercial heavy duty versions which are between 25-28 lbs.

Heard Australia This Morning on 160m

VK3XQ was spotted earlier and there were callers when I arrived.  I tried to get my call in there but was simply outshouted by the others.  They were probably running legal limit compared to my 500W.  The DX was S3 with the preamp and the noise floor was S1 so he was copyable,  I can tell he had trouble hearing as the callers were well over S9 from my QTH and kept asking for fills.  They had an S unit advantage over me.  They were probably barely above the noise floor on the other end.  As for me, I was probably buried in the noise.  It was good to know that I can hear signals out that far on the K9AY.  

Here is the basic antenna I was using and is a modification of the basic inverted L with quarter wave elevated radials. The elevated radials were 9 feet off the ground.  The feedpoint is also elevated - perhaps a foot above the ground plane - so basically the same level.

The EZNEC model was remarkably accurate in predicting the SWR dip.

FT4TA Tromelin is Now History

Yesterday I caught the tail end of the pileup on 20m and the chasers were still going strong.  At about 0100 UTC 11/10/14, the band went silent.  The DX was no more.  The night before we managed to get friend WM4AA into the log.  The pileups on 20m were huge, 25 kCs up.  One guy on the cluster posted - 20 hours for one QSO.  WM4AA said he never worked so hard to get the one contact, and that contact was tenuous at best.  It was nice to get a couple of solid ones early.  I was disgusted at first by the behavior of the North American hams chasing this DX, with all the QRM, jamming and language, and even on CW.  In this hobby though, you can not be fazed by bad behavior.  K4SV kept spurring us on along with Rosie Lamb W4NL from NCDXCC.  She was a real trooper getting 17 band slots

FT4TA Hot New Dxpedition - Broke the 250 barrier - Tromelin in LOTW

The first few days were discouraging with the QRM, band cops and lids.  Maybe things are beginning to settle down.  I picked up two bands and two modes - 17m phone and 20m RTTY.  I will try for 80m CW tomorrow.     For those of you on the east coast - propagation into the Carolinas is best between 22 UTC and 2 UTC across the bands.   For the low bands - it is best between 0 UTC and 2 UTC - Good Luck!!!  Bonus - FT4TA logs are now in LOTW and I did not have to send $2 by Paypal.  Free -  wow almost makes the lids and band cops worth it.

New shack setup with K9AY Listening Antenna

The K9AY proved to be helpful in helping me bag my last few DX especially on 80m as I was able to bag 5R8M Madagascar in the log.

The box on the right is an RTR1A transmit and receive relay switch between TX and RX.  The relay shuts off the RF path into the receiver on TX.  The right switch can be on the TX antenna, the RX antenna on RX.  It also allows momentary monitoring of the TX antenna.  The center box is the K9AY control console.  The RX antenna is connected to both the K2 and the KX3.

My Experience as a W1AW/7 Operator

Needless to say, this was a learning experience.  There is a big difference between being the hunter and the hunted.  Normally I am on the other side of the pileup, amongst the other hunters.  And as is typical among the chasers, I would listen on VFO-a and TX on VFO-b.  When you are the hunted and in this case W1AW/7, the roles are reversed and so are the VFOs and this did not occur to me until a few minutes when a few callers told me I was listening down 5.  Logging and controlling the station slowed me down.  There were times, the remote computer would hang on TX.  This delayed my QSL and thanks to the calling station.  It seemed to many stations that I was on a 5 second delay.  After I got the hang of it, I was able to work 86 stations in 29 states.

WM4AA Milestone - 300 DXCC and QRP DXCC

My Field Day partner WM4AA reached a milestone this week. 300 DXCC and QRP DXCC. This is a rare combination of operating prowess. On 10/19, he logged a QSO with Lord Howe Island VK9DLX for #300.  Few operators reach this milestone in their lifetimes. Congratulations Matt. Lunch is on me tomorrow.

K9AY Loop is Up and Running

That is all that is visible of the two loops at right angles.  The peak is hanging from a tree at 25 feet.  Each loop is comprised of 85 feet of wire.  The NEMA box contains the relays that reverses the termination of the loops and has selectable terminating resistors selectable in the shack control box.  The control box also has a 16 dB preamp as well as a 1700-5000  Hz band pass filter.  The band pass filter is switched on with the preamp.  The loop direction is selectable in the control box.  The combination of the loop direction as well as the terminating resistor optimizes the null of the noise sources (QRN, broadcast stations, etc) that is to be minimized.  On 160 meters a 40 dB front to back ratio is typical.

160 Meter Antenna Now Up

My 160 meter antenna is just my modified inverted L that I used mainly for 30 and 80m.  It is largely based on the antenna design published by NU8Z.  All I did to it is added an extension of 15 feet to an otherwise 70 foot quarter wave inverted L.  The key to this extension is a piece of 2 inch PVC pipe wrapped with 156 turns of  tightly wound 14 gage insulated wire giving me about 119 mH of inductance.  This coil acts as a trap for frequencies below 80m.  The coil acts as a shortened 1/4 wave vertical on 160m.  A full size quarter wave on 160m is 40m long or roughly 134 feet.  The shortened vertical is about 85 feet long with the coil between the 70 foot and 15 foot extension.  It really works - the resulting SWR pattern is as shown below.

It rather narrow banded with about 50 kHz around the center frequency that is below 2:1 SWR.  The dip at 1820kHz.

It uses the same radial field as shown below.

On air results are QSOs with stations in the PA QSO party, W1AW/4 portable and friends N4IQ and N0TR.

It probably could be more efficient.  My input impedance is right at 52 ohms indicating that I need more radials.  On 80m it is efficient enough to have gotten me close to DXCC - 95 confirmed.

Three All Time New Ones - Seychelles, Nauru and Western Kiribati

I woke up early o October 7 thinking that I would hear Alaska on 80m.  The bands were empty except for T30D - Western Kiribati with a small pileup.  He was S1 just peeking out of the noise floor.  There were a bunch of loud W4 stations trying to call above him on his split listening range but he was not working any of theme.  The callers were about 2-3 kHz up and I was 1 kHz up.  He appeared to be working (at least from my vantage point) weaker stations.  I was running 500 watts on the KPA500.  With a  couple of calls he returned to me.  I showed up in his log in Clublog a couple of days later.

Nauru C21GC was much easier to work and I was able to get him on 30m and 80m.  I would like to get T30D on 80m as well.  T30D is spotted early mornings on 80m.

Seychelles S79KB was on 20m CW on October 6.

#247 DXCC Confirmed in LOTW - Eritrea E30FB

This was a tough one to get with all the lids on SSB.   I would rather have worked this on CW but then - those were the cards I was dealt.  Either grin and bear it and work it to get that all time new one, or accept that this all time new one will not be in the log.  Eritrea is activated so rarely that I thought it was worthwhile.

There is QST article on a two level equalizer that he came up.   Bob Heil since then invented the equalized microphone.

Man cannot hear 3dB difference.  He demonstrated it.  What is important is equalization to get an apparent gain in sound power level.  Passed array is how to get 15dB  on 75m and 40m.

Very Productive Evening for DX

I was surprised to see (or maybe not so surprised) that the combination of the KX3 and the KXPA100 was used in the Norfolk Island Dxpedition.

Propagation must be good - I worked VK9NT 8378 miles short path on a dipole at 500 watts on 12m.  He was really faint,

I also worked Benin (Africa) - a mere 5600 miles - on 3 bands - 17m, 20m and 15m all on the hex.

I also worked Tristan de Cunha - all on the same evening on 30m.  This has been one of the most productive DXing in quite some time - 5 band points.  Thanks to Sunspot AR1528 for the ionizing radiation.

NY4G and N4iQ on the Blue Ridge Parkway with a Hexbeam

This was a great PR tool for amateur radio to the general public.  We spent more time talking to hikers, bikers and drivers stopping to see what we were doing. We were mostly on 12 meters trying to chase North Dakota stations.  The WARC bands should be renamed "WORK" bands.  It is a lot of work to fill out empty slots in WAS in these bands.

Homebrew Hexbeam Center Post with Coax Inside PVC Tube

With a little patience this can be done and the photos are here to prove it.  This is for my second hex beam.  The first photo has most of the daisy chained coax inside.  This the connection for 17m.

The second photo shows the long tube ready to be cemented.

The third photo shows the finished 20 meter connection as well as the PL259 to install the feed line.

Here is the assembled centerpost.  The only thing missing is the cap with the eyebolt.  A little silicone caulk to make sure all joints are sealed and this assembly is watertight.

234 DXCC Entities Confirmed in LOTW and 5 Band DXCC Status

American Samoa is the latest to confirm for my all time new list.  I still need to ask for confirmation cards for Ghana 9G5ZZ, Maldives, and Taiwan which can bring the total to 237 of the 245 entities I have worked.  The others just seem to refuse to send confirmations despite my having paid money through the OQRS system or by sending green stamps

Among these are Benin, Indonesia, St Helena, Nepal, 

5 band DXCC is also now in sight with 105 entities worked on 80 meters.  Here is how I stand on confirmations

Heavy Duty Heat Sink installed into my KX3

The heavy duty heat sink allows for full power key down for between 300-400% longer time than the standard heat sink before the rig folds back power because of PA over temperature.  This will allow long ragchews on PSK 31 and reduces the drift seen when operating on JT65.

Hex Beam at Work Portable for the IARU HF Championship

The G3TXQ design broadband Hexbeam did yeomans work during the 2014 IARU HF Championship.

Here KK4ZJH is posing with my Hexbeam.  We were on a 150 foot high ridge with steep drop offs on either side of the ridge giving us a higher effective height above ground.  Our elevation was 3500 feet.  We were able to work over 480 stations.  Four of the 6 were not experienced contesters.

Two Americas - Lou Holtz Commentary - So Good I Had to Repost It

Subject: Two Americas - Lou Holtz nails it.

The Democrats are right, there are two Americas. The America that works, and
the America that doesn't. The America that contributes, and the America that
doesn't. It's not the haves and the have not's, it's the dos and the don'ts.
Some people do their duty as Americans, obey the law, support themselves,
contribute to society, and others don't.  That's the divide in America.
It's not about income inequality, it's about civic irresponsibility. It's
about a political party that preaches hatred, greed and victimization in
order to win elective office.   It's about a political party that loves
power more than it loves its country.  That's not invective, that's truth,
and it's about time someone said it.

The politics of envy was on proud display a couple weeks ago when President
Obama pledged the rest of his term to fighting "income inequality."  He
noted that some people make more than other people, that some people have
higher incomes than others, and he say that's not just.  That is the
rationale of thievery. The other guy has it, you want it, Obama will take it
for you. Vote Democrat. That is the philosophy that produced Detroit.  It is
the electoral philosophy that is destroying America.  It conceals a
fundamental deviation from American values and common sense because it ends
up not benefiting the people who support it, but a betrayal.  The Democrats
have not empowered their followers, they have enslaved them in a culture of
dependence and entitlement, of victim-hood and anger instead of ability and
hope. The president' premise -that you reduce income inequality by debasing
the successful -seeks to deny the successful the consequences of their
choices and spare the unsuccessful the consequences of their choices.
Because, by and large, income variations in society is a result of different
choices leading to different consequences. Those who choose wisely and
responsibility have a far greater likelihood of success, while those who
choose foolishly and irresponsibly have a far greater likelihood of failure.
Success and failure usually manifest themselves in personal and family
income.  You choose to drop out of high school or to skip college - and you
are apt to have a different outcome than someone who gets a diploma and
pushes on with purposeful education. You have your children out of wedlock
and life is apt to take one course; you have them within a marriage and life
is apt to take another course. Most often in life our destination is
determined by the course we take.

My doctor, for example, makes far more than I do. There is significant
income inequality between us. Our lives have had an inequality of outcome,
but, our lives also have had an in equality of effort.  While my doctor went
to college and then devoted his young adulthood to medical school and
residency, I got a job in a restaurant.  He made a choice, I made a choice,
and our choices led us to different outcomes.  His outcome pays a lot better
than mine. Does that mean he cheated and Barack Obama needs to take away his
wealth?  No, it means we are both free men in a free society where free
choices lead to different outcomes.   It is not inequality Barack Obama
intends to take away, it is freedom. The freedom to succeed, and the freedom
to fail. There is no true option for success if there is no true option for
failure. The pursuit of happiness means a whole lot less when you face the
punitive hand of government if your pursuit brings you more happiness than
the other guy.   Even if the other guy sat on his arse and did nothing.
Even if the other guy made a lifetime's worth of asinine and short sighted

Barack Obama and the Democrats preach equality of outcome as a right, while
completely ignoring inequality of effort. The simple Law of the Harvest - as
ye sow, so shall ye reap - is sometimes applied as, "The harder you work,
the more you get."  Obama would turn that upside down. Those who achieve are
to be punished as enemies of society and those who fail are to be rewarded
as wards of society. Entitlement will replace effort as the key to upward
mobility in American society if Barack Obama gets his way. He seeks a lowest
common denominator society in which the government besieges the successful
and productive to foster equality through mediocrity. He and his party speak
of two Americas, and their grip on power is based on using the votes of one
to sap the productivity of the other.  America is not divided by the
differences in our outcomes, it is divided by the differences in our

It is a false philosophy to say one man's success comes about unavoidably as
the result of another man's victimization. What Obama offered was not a
solution, but a separatism. He fomented division and strife, pitted one set
of Americans against another for his own political benefit.  That's what
socialists offer.  Marxist class warfare wrapped up with a bow. Two
Americas, coming closer each day to proving the truth to Lincoln's maxim
that a house divided against itself cannot stand.   "Life is ten percent

Boone NC Field Day and IARU Contest

The Field Day style excursion to Boone NC was a great success.  Nothing documents it better than photos.  Main living room below.  We did not spend much time there.

We did spend most of our time in the basement which we turned into a big ham shack.  All in all we had 9 antennas to 7 stations.  Phil Chartier AC4Q in the foreground with Larry KK4QOB and Rod KK4HXA in the background.
